Did you ever have one of those moments where the future seems so clear? Where the events of tomorrow can be seen with all the clarity of a moment from the decided past? I can recall one such incident. It was a bright day in March of 2004---the first day that the liberal radio station Air America hit the airwaves. My liberal friend approached me that day and asked “You know what today is, don’t you?”

I replied, “No. What’s today?”

“Today’s the day that Air America begins broadcasting!” he replied with a gleam in his eye. “Aren’t you worried?” he asked, knowing that I, as a conservative, had little more than contempt for the modern American Left.

“Worried?” I asked. “Why would I be worried?”

My friend rolled his eyes with dissatisfaction at my coy attitude. I knew what he was getting at, but I wanted to hear him articulate it. “Because now Rush has competition!” he exclaimed.

I chuckled and replied, “My friend, it is you that should be worried.”

He frowned at my unexpected reply. “Why is that?” he asked.

“Because after today, the American Left will have no more excuses as to why they are constantly losing election after election,” I answered. My friend just frowned, so I continued. “You see, we talk-radio conservatives have been listening to the Left for years complain and moan about how Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity have managed to brainwash America because there is no competing liberal talk radio network to counter ‘their lies’. Well, now they finally have their own radio station, with a hand-picked selection of the best, brightest, and most talented liberal intellectuals, and you know what?” I asked.

“What?” he cautiously inquired.

“When it is all said and done, and the hype which will drive the initial ratings is over, Air America is going to fail because they are providing nothing more than the same tired, doom and gloom rhetoric that the American people can get from ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, the New York Times…well, you get the idea. The station will fail and when it does, you guys are going to have to face that the majority of Americans just don’t like liberal anti-American pseudo-logic.”

He was not happy with my analysis.

So, has my prediction proved true? Check out this recent quote, from The Washington Post, concerning the state of Air America:

“Air America, the liberal talk network carried on WWRC-AM (1260), went from bad to nonexistent. After WWRC recorded a mere fraction of a rating point in the spring with syndicated shows from the likes of lefty talkers Al Franken, Janeane Garofalo and Stephanie Miller, Arbitron couldn't detect a measurable listenership for the station this time around."

Check and mate.

Yes, these would have to be hard times for libs. First they witnessed America “go red” in the aftermath of the 2004 election, and now their super-weapon, the radio station hyped by the left-wing media to unbelievable proportions, and even financed by George Soros himself, has proven to be a dismal failure. Yes, these must be demoralizing times for our wacky friends on the Left.

Can I call ‘em, or what?

By the Way: Not only is Air America in trouble, but it would seem Al Franken is in a bit of hot water himself. From the Federalist Patriot:

"The author of Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them, Al Franken, appears to be caught in a little prevarication of this own. Several weeks ago The Patriot reported on his Air America scandal, whereby the Leftist start-up radio enterprise "borrowed" 75,000 from the taxpayer-subsidized Gloria Wise Boys and Girls Club in the Bronx. Air American later refused to pay it back, insisting the loan was the responsibility of the previous owner. On 8 August, Franken told his listeners, "I didn't know anything about this until late last week."

However, new documents would indicate Franken certainly did know about the transfers, or so he attested in November, 2004. The document in question is a settlement agreement between Air America's former and present owners, with Franken's notarized signature, outlining the company's liability to Gloria Wise. For somebody has made a career of accusing conservatives of lying?Franken now appears to have full knowledge of shady loans from a tax-funded urban children's charity to subsidize his rant-radio outlet. Perhaps a revised edition of Lying Liars is in order."

Things are not going well for Mordor and its minions. Recently, an email sent from Al Qaeda deputy leader Ayman al-Zawahiri to freelance Iraqi butcher Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was intercepted by US intelligence officials. The contents are fascinating. He begins with his strategic vision and then details the number of difficulties they have encountered which, for all intents and purposes, could clearly be recognized as a failure vis-a-vis the jihad against US troops and the freely elected Iraqi government. This is must-read material for every American concerned about our effort in Iraq and the War on Terror.

The following are selected comments from Sauron, er… Zawahiri which I found particularly interesting (with comments by me):

TO: Abu Musab al- Zarqawi
FROM: Al Qaeda deputy leader Ayman al-Zawahiri

“The summer started hot with operations escalating in Afghanistan. The enemy struck a blow against us with the arrest of Abu al-Faraj, may God break his bonds… However, the real danger comes from the agent Pakistani army that is carrying out operations in the tribal areas looking for mujahedeen.”

Hmm, things don’t sound so good for the jihadists, despite DNC clamoring to the contrary. Despite all the nay-saying, military might is having a negative effect upon the terrorists. This has got to disappoint the “make love, not war” crowd of the Left.

“It has always been my belief that the victory of Islam will never take place until a Muslim state is established in the manner of the Prophet in the heart of the Islamic world, specifically in the Levant, Egypt, and the neighboring states of the Peninsula and Iraq; however, the center would be in the Levant and Egypt…As for the battles that are going on in the far-flung regions of the Islamic world, such as Chechnya, Afghanistan, Kashmir, and Bosnia, they are just the groundwork and the vanguard for the major battles which have begun in the heart of the Islamic world.”

This is a fascinating peek at the strategic vision of the Islamic fascists. Did you notice how there is no mention of defeating US imperialism, capitalist-corporate exploitation, or President Bush stealing the 2000 election? I guess Howard Dean and Noam Chomsky got the wrong set of talking points. Also, the next time someone tries to tell you that Iraq has no connection to the oft quoted “broader war on terror,” the last sentence from above dispels that myth. Commit it to memory.

“So we must think for a long time about our next steps and how we want to attain it, and it is my humble opinion that the Jihad in Iraq requires several incremental goals:
The first stage: Expel the Americans from Iraq. The second stage: Establish an Islamic authority… in order to fill the void stemming from the departure of the American… The third stage: Extend the jihad wave to the secular countries neighboring Iraq.”

What does this mean for Nancy Pelosi’s repeated demands for the withdrawal of American troops according to a timetable that’s set in stone? Gasp! Could she be…wrong??? And what does this mean for those who constantly repeat that the only reason terrorists are in Iraq is because we are there? Is the all-knowing “peace-at-any-price” Left in error? Could US troops actually be serving to stabilize Iraq, and hence, the region? The answer to all these questions, of course, is a resounding YES!

“The fourth stage: It may coincide with what came before: the clash with Israel, because Israel was established only to challenge any new Islamic entity.”

But what about Israel’s painful concession of territory to quiet West Bank and Gaza jihadists? Aren’t they in good stead with their Islamic neighbors now? I guess not….

“What drives me to broach these matters while we are in the din of war and the challenges of killing and combat? My answer is, firstly: Things may develop faster than we imagine. The aftermath of the collapse of American power in Vietnam-and how they ran and left their agents-is noteworthy.”

Attention all you Vietnam-era hippes! All you defeatists! All you politicians and journalists that love to shout ?quagmire!? whenever the US goes to war! This passage is for you! Notice the contempt and scorn heaped upon America because of our shameful withdrawal from Vietnam. We have YOU to thank for that. Claim your despicable prize and join the ranks of the world's fifth columnist enemy-appeasers who will ultimately be discarded upon the ash heap of history. NO MORE VIETNAMS!!!

“For that reason, many of your Muslim admirers amongst the common folk are wondering about your attacks on the Shia. The sharpness of this questioning increases when the attacks are on one of their mosques, and it increases more when the attacks are on the mausoleum of Imam Ali Bin Abi Talib, may God honor him. My opinion is that this matter won't be acceptable to the Muslim populace however much you have tried to explain it, and aversion to this will continue.”

This passage is an excellent example of the importance of winning the hearts and minds of the people. Clearly, Zawahiri believes that all the homicide bombings, even against their Shiite opponents, are not proving popular among the people of Iraq. Jeez, you think??? Looks like some of these jihadists can be as dense in the head as the Democrats. Who would have thought blowing women and children to bits would prove unpopular?

“And even if we attack the Shia out of necessity, then why do you announce this matter and make it public, which compels the Iranians to take counter measures? And do the brothers forget that both we and the Iranians need to refrain from harming each other at this time in which the Americans are targeting us?”

Normally, you try to divide and conquer your enemy. In this case, Zawahiri is alleging that Zarqawi, the Jordanian military genius, has accomplished this goal for us! How funny is that?!? This is a clear case of dissension in the ranks. That’s good news for us and the Iraqi people, but very bad news for Sauron and Saruman.

“Among the things which the feelings of the Muslim populace who love and support you will never find palatable - also- are the scenes of slaughtering the hostages... And we can kill the captives by bullet.”

As I read this, I thought of all the continuing fuss and bother over the Abu Graib scandal and Demorat Dick Durbin comparing our Gitmo Marines to Nazis. While we do this, our enemies calmly debate the negative public relations impact of slaughtering innocent people being held captive as political fodder. How does Zawahiri?s resolve this dilemma between needing to spill blood and winning flattering spots on the nightly news? Why, kill the captives with a bullet instead---it is much more palatable that way(!). We agonize if the murderous thugs sitting in Cuban detainment cells are receiving their fair share of glazed chicken while these Islamic fascists are proving themselves worthy to be called true heirs to Hitler?s genocidal vision. How ironic is that?

“The author of these lines has tasted the bitterness of American brutality, and that my favorite wife's chest was crushed by a concrete ceiling and she went on calling for aid to lift the stone block off her chest until she breathed her last…As for my young daughter, she was afflicted by a cerebral hemorrhage, and she continued for a whole day suffering in pain until she expired. And to this day I do not know the location of the graves of my wife, my son, my daughter, and the rest of the three other families who were martyred in the incident and who were pulverized by the concrete ceiling….”

I wonder how many New Yorkers suffered a similar fate on 9-11 when the Twin Towers came down? I guess you can chalk this up to reaping what you sow. I hope many more terrorists meet similar fates at the hands of American military might. In fact, this passage should be sent to every would-be attacker of this great nation. Consider it fair warning….

“Please take every caution in the meetings, especially when someone claims to carry an important letter or contributions. It was in this way that they arrested Khalid Sheikh. Likewise, please, if you want to meet one of your assistants, I hope that you don't meet him in a public place or in a place that is not known to you. I hope that you would meet him in a secure place, not the place of your residence. Because Abu al-Faraj - may God set him free and release him from his torment - was lured by one of his brothers, who had been taken into custody, to meet him at a public location where a trap had been set.”

Always look over your shoulder…justice is just a step away. I hope you enjoy moving from one rat hole to another for the rest of your life, because that is the only existence you can now anticipate for the rest of your days.

“So, if you're capable of sending a payment of approximately one hundred thousand, we'll be very grateful to you.”

Al Qaeda begging money from its minions? Not a good sign for the ork army….

The letter then concludes with a list of publications authored by Zawahiri and recommended for Zarqawi’s study (I wonder how many made the official MoveOn.org reading list?).

This was an altogether fascinating letter, in many ways, very similar in presentation to Hitler's Mein Kampf. Best of all, it was all bad news for the enemy from the East. No wonder why Al Qaeda was quick to denounce the letter as a fraud---it could really hurt them in the field.

But the bad news for Mordor doesn’t stop there. Just this past Saturday, the Iraqi people ratified their first constitution, despite the feeble efforts of the jihadists. Let’s see: a working and open political process, quickly diminishing support among the Iraqi people, and increasing military and financial pressure upon the whole rotten structure. No, these are not good days for our enemy.

The sun is beginning to shine in the West once again.

I don’t go to see too many movies in the theater because they are just not worth the $10. As a result, I am much more inclined to patiently await the release of the film on DVD and rent it at my convenience. It is for this reason that I have just gotten around to seeing Ridley Scott’s Kingdom of Heaven. Normally, I am a big fan of Mr. Scott, especially of his Gladiator movie, but I must say that his crusading epic has thoroughly missed the mark by proving to be little more that anti-Christian political correctness run amok.

The good news is that KoH is not as bad as the awful King Arthur, a film that literally drips with anti-Catholic venom. That movie made me want to run screaming from the television and begin fervently praying for a good old fashioned Roman Catholic inquisition within the confines of Hollywood. KoH isn’t nearly that bad, but it does offer a more watered down version of the "organized religion is bad, amorphous spirituality is good" type of arithmetic.

The movie’s religious phobia becomes apparent quite early. Within the first five minutes, we are immediately confronted with a Catholic priest that steals a crucifix from a dead woman in the process of being buried (we later learn that this is the body of the wife of Orlando Bloom’s protagonist, Balian)! This initial shocking scene proves to be the rule, and not the exception, for KoH’s non-stop sermonizing against the evils of organized religion. From there, we are deluged with continuous imagery of Catholic noblemen and Crusaders, most notably the Templars and the Hospitallers, indulging in the worst aspects of human conduct, including avarice, war mongering, and senseless brutality. But what about simple ‘stupidity’, the favorite aspersion cast upon religious folk by the politically correct crowd? Well, not to leave any stone unturned, Mr. Scott provides us with the Bishop of Jerusalem, a man that neatly portrays every dim-witted Christian stereotype ever invented by anti-religious bigots. Not only is he stupid, but he is also a yellow coward. In one particularly interesting scene, the bishop declares that he would willingly abandon his faith, convert to Islam, and abandon his flock to sure death just to save his own skin!

And this is just a superficial sampling of the anti-Christian tone set by the film!

Needless to say, the real heroes of the film, from Bloom’s Balian, to Jeremy Iron’s Godfrey, are all characters who declare that organized religion is for fools, that the real kingdom of heaven is found in the non-denominational hearts of mankind. It is here that another flaw of the film becomes apparent---the ceaseless humanist sermonizing of the characters. Every line uttered by Bloom, Irons, et alia, is simply dripping with overwrought emotion, as if the dialogue was handed down by God to William Monahan, the scriptwriter. Of course, to anyone with a discerning ear, you quickly realize that all this pontificating amounts to zilch; it is nothing more than political correctness proffered as wisdom. At times it is so silly that it is almost laughable! Only in Hollywood could such drivel be taken seriously.

The film’s protagonist, Balian, is also a curious character to uphold as a virtuous hero. Shortly into the film, we watch as Balian, in a fit of anger, murders the village priest by running him through with a sword! Not content with that act of violence, he then throws the dying priest into his furnace where he watches him burn alive! Balian then flees the authorities and ultimately finds his way to the Holy Land where, shortly after being knighted by his dying father and charged with upholding a virtuous code of knightly conduct, promptly has an affair with the wife of a rival knight! If this is Mr. Scott’s idea of a hero, I shudder to think what his idea of a villain is---oh wait, a Christian…that’s right.

Surely, in an earnest effort to be fair, Mr. Scott portrays Islam with a similarly cynical brush, right? Silly…of course not. In fact, Muslims, as principally portrayed by Ghassan Massoud as Saladin (the only actor to give an excellent performance), are shown as everything that Christians are not….wise, tolerant, and merciful. In perhaps one of the more infamous scenes of KoH, we witness Saladin lovingly pick up a crucifix and place it carefully upon an altar in the supreme act of religious tolerance. Now, to be fair, Saladin truly was a chivalrous historical figure, but even this scene strains credulity. Mr. Scott seems to have forgotten that the Crusades were a defensive reaction to the slashing, burning, and enslaving of Christians by Islamic armies---but such a admittance would run counter to KoH's endless demonizing of Christian Europe. Therefore, the film’s indictment of religion is strictly one-sided. Of course, I do sort of understand this decision as, if Mr. Scott portrayed Islamic clerics with all the hurtful stereotyping he lavished upon Christians, no doubt a fatwa with his name on it would be promulgated throughout the Islamic world. He couldn’t have that, could he? Better to play it safe and bash his Western-Christian heritage in the spirit of religious tolerance.

Not that the film is completely awful. It is a beautiful film to behold, the cinematography very reminiscent of Laurence of Arabia. Also, the battle scenes are well done, if a bit chaotic at times. I did find the climatic siege of Jerusalem to be less than thrilling---the siege of Minas Tirith in Return of the King was far more intense. Finally, the eye for historical detail is to be praised---everything serves to convey the viewer to an authentic-looking medieval world. But that’s about all I can say about the better aspects of this film.

Unlike King Arthur, which I truly believe was made to deliberately besmirch the Roman Catholic Church, I do accept that Mr. Scott’s intentions were pure. I watched him promoting KoH as a film that urges religious tolerance in a post-9/11 world. I do believe that was his intention---and that is what is so sad about this film. Mr. Scott & Co. truly believes that this is a fair and balanced look at religion and the Crusades. In short, it is another example, in a long line of recent examples, of how Hollywood is out of touch with "red state" America. Who, but a Hollywood director, could consider a film that attacks the West and Christianity, while whitewashing Islamic aggression, as a balanced attempt at religious dialogue? Who, but Hollywood insiders, would even contemplate making such a film and releasing it in a nation that had suffered over 3000 deaths on a single day due to Islamic extremism? And who, but those steeped in the trendy spiritual movements of Hollywood would argue that the West’s great heritage of time-tested Christianity is the source of all the world’s problems?

Kingdom of Heaven could have filled an important void in our shared cinematic library. The Crusades truly were a significant episode in world history, one that continues to influence the modern world. If Ridley Scott was less interested in ramming a politically correct message down the throats of his audience, and more interested in a serious history flick, in the line of Gettysburg or The Longest Day, Kingdom of Heaven could have been a classic. Alas, as it stands, it might as well have been an Al Jezeera co-production.

Just some more musings on the aftermath of the worst natural disaster in American history….

First, the partisan attacks continue by the American Left, led, as usual, by the Democrat party. The amount of political profiteering by the DNC is simply shameless, evocative of the Northern carpetbaggers that flooded the South after the conclusion of the Civil War. From the shrill cries of Nancy Pelosi, to the irrational rants of Howard Dean, the charges being spewed out of the mouths of these despicable individuals is proving little different than the sewer backwash now flooding the streets of New Orleans. At a time of mass suffering, the best these so-called civic leaders can come up with is endless finger pointing. Maybe Dean and Pelosi should consider replacing Louisiana Governor Blanco and New Orleans Mayor Nagin? After all, they seem to have Louisianan blame-game politics down pat.

In general, I think the recent behavior of the Democrat Party has been very illustrative of just how bankrupt that party has become. In a vein similar to the 9-11 and the Iraq War, the Democrats have sought to use the misery and suffering of the Katrina disaster to score political points with the voters. Not by offering constructive efforts, mind you, but by trying to create new conspiracy theories in their on-going effort to demonize the Bush administration. So now we are routinely subjected to comments that Bush acted slowly because of the high number of poor blacks in the region (President Bush declared Louisiana a disaster area 48 hours before Katrina hit, but Blanco refused all federal assistance until 48 hours after the hurricane hit), or was unable to act because all the troops were deployed in Iraq (two-thirds of the Louisiana National Guard remained in-state), or the environmental policies of Bush are responsible for the hurricane (such a silly idea, no refutation is needed). Like the Kerry campaign of last year, Democrats would seem to still have nothing to offer the voters other than wild, wacky, and bitter GOP conspiracy theories---a state of affairs that will lead to even more Republican victories in years to come.

Of course, the media, the erstwhile allies of the Left, have jumped into the game in various ways. The most recent example is Time magazine’s expose of Michael Brown, the FEMA director. According to the ever-so reliable investigators at that magazine, Mr. Brown is guilty of padding his resume with unsubstantiated experience in crisis management. Of course, these allegations have not been supported by other sources, but that will not stop the Democrats from alleging all sorts of incompetence on the part of Brown and Bush (carefully avoiding any possible reminders that Brown had successfully handled other hurricane disasters prior to Katrina). I, for one, would like to ask about any possible resume’ padding on the Louisiana senator Mary Landrieu, and the hapless duo Blanco and Nagin. After all, these elected state officials have known for years about the potential flooding disaster that could occur after a major hurricane and yet were woefully unprepared when the bell finally tolled. What crisis management experience did they claim on their resume when they sought to shepherd the good people of that high risk state?

In general, the media did a poor job covering this event. Even Fox News, who usually seeks its own path when reporting on a major event, fell right in line with the doom-mongers of CNN and MSNBC. In many cases, journalists became part of the panicked population, adding to the hysteria instead of serving as a calming, reassuring voice. Again, unlike September 11, the media cracked and embraced sensationalism instead of professionalism.

In many ways, this disaster has highlighted how confused some Americans are concerning the organization of this great nation. I am shocked that so many people completely bypass the state and local governments and expect the federal government to be their primary caretaker. People need to be reminded that we are a federal republic, that Washington D.C. is not responsible for the day to day “health, welfare, and morals” of the people of the several states (that is the doctrine of State Rights). The state governments, along with the numerous levels of local government, shoulder that immense responsibility. The federal government acts only in a supplemental role to that charge, and then only when invited in by the state governors. The citizens of Louisiana should be asking what took the governor and mayor so long to act, and not addressing that question to FEMA. In fact, they should be demanding to know, from all levels of state government, why, after years of scientific studies concerning the danger posed to New Orleans, so little proactive preparation was made to ensure the city could survive a hit by a strong hurricane. Louisiana had received more federal aid than any other state in the Union (just under two billion during the last five years of the Bush administration), yet much of that money was diverted to pork-barrel projects (recently, the FBI in New Orleans described the state's public corruption as “epidemic, endemic, and entrenched”). Instead of vetting resumes, Time would be performing a real civic duty by looking for the answers to these questions. That will never happen, of course, because it would prove fatally embarrassing to one of the strongest liberal Democrat bastions in the nation.

All in all, Louisiana is an example of what happens when the people of a state succumb to the big government mentality. Instead of seeking self reliance, they depended on the promises of big government demagogues and have been catastrophically harmed as a result.

Another annoyance: celebrity activism. Why is it that celebrities, who normally contribute nothing to society, descend upon disaster areas with all the alacrity of a vulture to a carcass? It wouldn’t be so bad if these professional imposters would help out and keep quiet, but we are forever subjected to the prognostications of these individuals who…um, to be polite, I would not allow to balance my checkbook on one of their good days? Like the party they often support, a mindless rant of racism, class warfare, and liberal delusions are spouted with all the hypocrisy of Nero discoursing about the importance of fire prevention. To quote Laura Ingram, just “shut up and sing!”

Now the good news: despite these darker aspects of the Katrina disaster, America is still America. Not all the divisiveness of liberal politics, race-baiters, or air-head celebrities has stopped Americans from what they do best: helping the afflicted with unimaginable generosity of all sorts, including record amount of money and elbow grease. Our deep religious convictions continue to trump the bitter politics of the age and motivate all to pitch-in and help out. Indeed, many churches and Roman Catholic religious orders have been first on the scene, alleviating as much suffering as they possible can, even without the help of Hillary Clinton’s investigative committees or Nancy Pelosi’s demand for FEMA firings. Likewise, ordinary Americans of every type and color have joined hands to make right what has gone so terribly wrong. The Gulf Coast, like a phoenix from the ashes, will emerge better and stronger for the trials now testing it. Why? Because that is the flame of the American Spirit at work, and nothing will ever dim that light.

But we're going to show the world, once again, that not only will we survive, but that we will be stronger and better for it when it's all said and done, that amidst this darkness, there is light. And I want to thank you all for providing light, immediate light to people who needed help. You make your state and your local governments and your country proud... Americans can be certain our nation has the character, the resources and the resolve to overcome this disaster. We will comfort and care for the victims. We will restore the towns and neighborhoods that have been lost in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama [and] rebuild the great city of New Orleans. And we'll once again show the world that the worst adversities bring out the best in America." —President George W. Bush in Louisiana

Such now reads a grim list of cities that have suffered utter destruction from either manmade or natural disasters.

Hurricane Katrina has become the most destructive natural disaster in the history of this great nation. The proud Southern people of the Gulf Coast have been blasted by a category 4 storm that has unleashed the equivalent energy of several thousand nuclear warheads.

And it shows.

The entire coastal region, especially, but not limited to, Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi, seem scrubbed clear as if by a giant belt sander. I have never seen anything like it, at least not at this enormous scale. I’ve heard of a region of a state being devastated by a storm, but never an entire region of a country!

The dimensions of the humanitarian crisis are just starting to become clear with hundreds of thousands of people now homeless, no electricity in many areas of the South, and only sporadic phone service. Things cannot be expected to improve for some time---possibly months to more than a year….

Therefore, our fellow citizens of the Sunny South need our help. Please contribute what you can to these, and other, charities:

While the entire Gulf Coast has been hit hard, the city of New Orleans has proven to be a particularly grim situation. With two or more levees burst, the city, which lies below sea level, has suffered a flood comparable to the tsunami that struck Asia and India last December. Entire neighborhoods are underwater, making escape difficult or impossible. Like the rest of the Gulf Coast, Katrina knocked out all electricity and telephone service. However, because of the flooding, water service has failed as well and no infrastructure repairs are possible until the water can be pumped out of this fishbowl of a city.

And that could take over a month!

Worse, New Orleans has fallen victim to a spate of violence. In scenes reminiscent of The Road Warrior, civil authority has given way to gang authority. Rape, murder, arson, and lots of looting are sweeping the partially abandoned city as law enforcement officials appear unable or unwilling to intervene in many cases. Again, I have never seen anything like this! Firefighters come under attack as they attempt to put out fires and police are forced to engage gangs in battle to ensure that emergency supplies reach the needy.

It’s apocalyptic.

All civil authority seems to have collapsed in the city. Unlike New York after 9-11, Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco and New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin seem incapable of reasserting any sort of control. The governor’s actions, practically since Katrina had first appeared to be on a collision with the state, have been haphazard and a textbook definition of ‘too little, too late’. Mayor Nagin doesn’t even deserve that meager credit. In fact, the good mayor has refused any more press conferences because he is unhappy with the lack of progress in the rescuing of his city. Of course, he fails to recall that he was elected mayor and, therefore, he is responsible for getting things done. Instead, Mayor Nagin finds it easier to rant and rave, and place the blame for the entire situation at the feet of the federal government (as if President Bush and/or FEMA is solely responsible for welfare of his constituents) instead of getting out there and leading the people of his city during this time of crisis. It is shameful display of a mayor abrogating his responsibilities.

Clearly, he is no Rudy Giuliani!

The entire situation smacks of incompetence---doubly so since this disaster has been studied in detail for decades. Despite countless warnings, the civil authority of Louisiana seems to have given little more than lip service and a wink and a nod to emergency planning. The wretched spectacle at the Super Dome, where 30,000 citizens have been virtually abandoned by city and state leaders for the last four days, is proof of the fact.
The whole sorry mess is a disgrace, from the lack of state and city leadership, to the criminals who now prowl the flooded streets. New Orleans has moved from a wound to a festering sore on the body politic. Huey Long must be turning over in his grave….

And things are only going to get worse. It is no exaggeration to say that we are all watching the death of an American city as it is simply not habitable in its current state. Disease will soon become rampant as sewage and perhaps thousands of bodies begin to fester. Before the month is out, New Orleans will be a ghost town and removed from the American map indefinitely. Incredible.

Fortunately, the response of the federal government, with President Bush at the helm, has been swift and massive. In less than four days, an armada of federal aid has been unleashed throughout the South, filling the Louisiana power vacuum (it is interesting to note how the strong civic leadership in Mississippi and Alabama has not encountered any of the problems now plaguing Louisiana). This FEMA assistance has proven critical, along with the aid offered by The Red Cross, The Salvation Army, Catholic Charities and numerous other organizations. As is always the case, when people are in need, the American people, either directly or through the national government, have stepped up to the plate.

Unfortunately, some are seeking to use this unprecedented disaster as a platform for racial politics. Confronted with thousands of poor black folks wandering New Orleans and televised scenes of wholesale looting by portions of the city’s 65% black population, professional race baiters like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson have begun an attempt to divide America in a time when unity is needed. Truthfully, no one should be surprised. After all, Sharpton was the guy who explained that white America had it coming after Colin Ferguson, a paranoid black racist, shot up white men and women on the LIRR, and Jackson is the professional racial blackmailer of American corporations. Nonetheless, these disgusting purveyors of racist schemes need to be held accountable for their despicable accusations during this time of crisis. “White America” is not to blame for the plight of the black population of New Orleans. If Sharpton, et alia are dissatisfied with what they see, they should look to the racial politics of the Democrat party---after all, New Orleans specifically and Louisiana in general have been bastions of liberal democrats for countless generations. Is it any surprise that Louisianan minorities have proven to be so vulnerable during this crisis? America is witnessing nothing more than the logical result of decades of liberal policies that cared more about racial demagoguery than about helping people of all color to improve their lives, become self-sufficient, and depart the helpless projects.

Believe me, there is a special place in hell for the people who are pouring gasoline on this human catastrophe, and it won’t matter a darn whether or not they have “Reverend” before their name.

And that is where we stand for the moment. Like a scene from The Day After, the Gulf Coast has been devastated as if by a nuclear war. But the Southern people are strong and will persevere with the grace of Christ. They will rebuild soon enough. But until then,

I Have A Confession To Make….

…I am a toonhead! Yes, yes, it’s true, oh so true! I cannot help myself! When channel surfing, I am inevitably drawn to either Nickelodeon or the Cartoon Network. Can you blame me? Have you seen the slop that passes for entertainment these days on the other networks? Cartoons offer a welcome respite from the filthy, nihilistic shows that pass for quality programming on the other TV stations.

I guess my “problem” started as a youngster. I loved such ‘toons as Tom & Jerry and the entire Warner Brothers lineup, from Bugs Bunny to Foghorn Leghorn (no Walt Disney, please---that’s strictly kid’s stuff). Even at a young age, I recognized that these shows were works of pure comedy genius. Decades later, these ‘toons still hold their own and remain untarnished by the passage of time, the true test of a bona fide classic, and continue to hold a fond place in my heart.

Unlike others, I never did grow out of my delight in ‘toons. Maybe it was because, as a cultural conservative, I never became mesmerized by sophomoric dramas, like The OC, those silly and ghoulish crime programs that critics love to describe as “gritty” (I prefer the term “vulgar”) such as CSI Miami, or the current fad of so-called “reality TV”. Even popular sitcoms, like Seinfeld and Raymond, seem replete with tired jokes and punch lines that can be seen coming a mile away. And don’t even get me started on Saturday Night Live or Mad TV---sardonic shows that are the perfect examples of everything wrong with modern comedy.

No, for me, ‘toons are “where it’s at”, as they say, when it comes to clever humor.

In particular, I have three favorites:

First, there is The Simpsons. Little explication is required here. The Simpsons did for animation what Rush Limbaugh did for talk radio---it revitalized a whole genre. Disproving the old maxim that America does not want a prime-time cartoon (unlike Japan where cartoons are in high demand by adults), the show quickly became a huge hit (now entering its seventeenth season!) with everyone from the ages of ten to eighty---and rightly so. The Simpsons restored something almost lost to this nation: true satire. Politics, cable theft, family disputes and even NASA’s space program, amongst many, many other topics, have all proven to be fertile ground for the comedic genius of Matt Groening, the show’s creator. While, at times, the show will dip slightly into humor not suitable for anyone under 13, by and large this program delivers entertainment that brings the family together. Watch The Simpsons on FOX.

Second, we have Spongebob Squarepants. I love this show. Similar to Bugs Bunny before him, Spongebob is a well-meaning, fry cook sponge that can discern the humor in even the worst situations and the best in even the curmudgeonliest of individuals (such as Plankton, the “college educated” nemesis of Spongebob’s employer, Mr. Krabs). This attitude makes the show very uplifting (buoyant?) in an entertainment culture that seems obsessed with the worst aspects of human existence. Similar to The Simpsons, the underwater antics of Spongebob are ostensibly aimed at youngsters, but the show is filled with humor that any adult can appreciate (workplace politics is a common theme). Along with Patrick Star, his starfish friend, and Squidward Tentacles, his octopus neighbor (who could best be described as the underwater-equivalent of a Greenwich Village elitist), this trio will provide countless nights filled with true mirth that the whole family can enjoy. Catch Spongebob Squarepants, a Steven Hillenburg production, on Nickelodeon. Don’t forget to rent (I recommend you buy) the terrific Spongebob Squarepants Movie on DVD too!

By the way: for the record---SPONGEBOB IS NOT GAY! Sheesh! Leave it to some people to try to corrupt one of the few innocent shows left on television….

Finally, there is a relatively new show that I have been finding most amusing. It is called Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends and, after Spongebob, is probably one of the most imaginative shows on TV. Have you ever wondered what happened to your childhood imaginary friend after you outgrew him? Well, this show posits the idea that such discarded friends ultimately find their way to Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, a halfway house / adoption agency that specializes in finding new homes for these creatures. The protagonists of this show are a young boy, Mac, and his imaginary friend, Bloo, who often find themselves involved in various comedic adventures that result from the day-to-day activities that surround the home and its inhabitants. Craig McCraken, the creator who also fashioned the popular Power Puff Girls, has brought his eccentric brand of humor to this ‘toon as well. Let me assure you: Foster’s has proven to be laugh-out-loud funny. The animation is similar to PPG, colorful but a bit flat, something which, nonetheless, adds a moody charm to Foster’s. Another charming aspect of Foster’s is the many movies McCraken lampoons with his clever use of dialogue (for example, McCraken once constructed an entire episode of PPG in which the dialogue was taken completely from the lyrics of the Beatles!) and his mocking cinematic techniques (part of the episodic fun is in identifying which movie is being teased ---and I’m not just talking about kid movies, either!). And like Spongebob, the show proves to be a well of virtue as the human and human-invented inhabitants of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends all work together for the common good of its friendly community. These are the three best reasons why I am a ‘toon head. Each one of these cartoons is fresh, funny, and moral, without being bitter, vulgar, or depraved. In today’s world, many non-animated shows could learn a lesson or two from such fare. As broadcast television continues its inexorable slide into muck and despair, at least FOX, Nickelodeon, and the Cartoon Network have offered something that families can enjoy together. Better, even adults, with an appetite for innocent fun, can enjoy these as well. In a wasteland of sex and violence, The Simpsons, Spongebob Squarepants, and Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends offers the oasis of peace that comes with good, clean fun.

Enter the Martial Matrix

My brow was beginning to collect beads of sweat. I didn’t know if it was from fear or from exertion. We had been forced under the Atlantic waves ever since I took a four-shot salvo at an outgoing British merchant convoy leaving the coast of Algeria.

That was two hours ago!

Since then, I have had at least one, sometimes as many as three, Flower-class corvettes angrily patrolling overhead, dropping depth charges in an attempt to attain revenge for damaging one of its charges---a 6400-ton C2 Cargo container. So far, through silent running and some clever maneuvering, the salvoes of the enemy had missed. But for how much longer could I keep this up?

After another 20 minutes, my sonar man tells me that the damaged freighter is limping along to my north, and based upon the sounds of corvette screws and depth charge explosions, the enemy is concentrating its search in that area. There may be an opportunity here….

I set a southerly course and creep along at 5 knots for 30 minutes with no further attacks by the enemy. I slowly rise to periscope depth and look to the north and am greeted with a pleasant view. I see the damaged cargo freighter about 3 kilometers to the north, a moderate fire consuming its stern, and a smaller fire burning amidships. It is barely making headway at a 1 knot drift. Just to its south, I see a lone Flower corvette patrolling around the vessel, protecting its wounded charge as it mopes along.
The C2 is burning, but does not appear to be low in the water. It needs to be finished off….

I open number 3 and 4 torpedo tubes and prepare to launch my last salvo. I take distance, speed, and angle on the bow readings for the cargo ship and relay the figures to my weapons officer who promptly enters them into the attack computer. This, in turn, computes the proper attack geometry, relaying the information to the forward torpedo bay where the weapon is properly configured. Torpedo Launch! I order, and a hiss is heard as high-pressure air expels the weapon. I then repeat the procedure on the Flower-class corvette in the hopes of killing a potential avenger.

I do not order an immediate dive as the enemy ship seems unaware that we are still in the area and have launched an attack. I examine my stopwatch and see that the first torpedo still has 60 seconds to run, with the second having 80 seconds. I anxiously count the seconds off until….

A BOOM! resounds through the hull. I look through my periscope and am rewarded with a large water plume! A hit! A smile creeps across my face as the vessel breaks in two.
Unfortunately, the second torpedo exceeds its running time, indicating a miss against the corvette---which is now furious and heading at high speed in my general direction. It must have spotted my periscope feather….

I order my sub, U-47, the Schwarze Katz, to 100 meters at flank speed. Before we reach 75 meters, the first salvo of depth charges start exploding, close enough to rock the sub from side to side. I order evasive action and silent running. Here we go again….

Fortunately, with the death of the C2, the corvette loses interest in prosecuting me after another 30 minutes of fruitless action. My sonar man reports the faint sounds of screws to the north---probably the remains of the convoy we initially attacked---and the corvette seems headed in that direction, apparently to rejoin the main body.

We survived. I surface the boat and set the crew to beginning repairing some of the superficial deck damage caused by a few too many near-misses. After being “under” for so long, I find myself deeply breathing the fresh air. A sad thought occurs to me as I take in the now calm waters that surround the boat: the future is grim. It is only September of 1941, and I know that there is a long war ahead of us….

Did I lose my mind? Or maybe I invented a time machine? I suspect many of you prefer the former, but, in truth, both are wrong. The above action was a typical session of Silent Hunter 3, the excellent World War Two submarine simulator from UbiSoft. I highly recommend it---it is a WarTech favorite.

Now, why did I feel the need to write up my experiences in the game? Because this simulator caused something wonderful to happen---it allowed me to (safely) participate in a very dangerous, yet fascinating, profession: that of a World War Two U-Boat captain. For over three hours of real time (not game time), I sat with rapt attention in front of my computer, stalking and being stalked within an incredibly realistic virtual environment.

How many television programs or movies can so thoroughly hold your attention for the same length of time? I bet not too many….

Computers are really beginning to deliver on the promise made so many years ago, back when 8-bit Atari 800XLs could only offer crude sounds and graphics. Personal computers can now offer truly interactive and realistic experiences that heretofore only select movies and books could match in our imaginations. Modern technology is finally allowing us to make and star in our own movies!

This is remarkable! I ponder how, if the trend of affordable, yet powerful, home computer technology continues, such programs as SH3 will affect the future of American entertainment. Perhaps, at long last, the “idiot box” will die and yield the future to sophisticated, interactive programs that will instruct as well as excite? I do hope so.

But there are even greater implications. In addition to simulators such as SH3, there are already sophisticated wargames, available to the home user, which simulate modern warfare---many of which are actually in use by America’s armed forces, no less. They are not as glitzy as Silent Hunter 3, but just as realistic. How will such software affect American politics?

The virtues of military life are well known with the most obvious being a keen understanding of the cost of liberty. Once upon a time, a large portion of this nation’s political leadership had been educated by military academies which instilled this important lesson into their students. While few common folk could afford to attend such academies, many had served in this nation’s conscript army over the years and, as a result, they too were instructed about the necessary martial burdens of freedom.

Unfortunately, this is no longer the case.

With a nation that now has an all-volunteer army, only a small percentage of the electorate has become acquainted with the military virtues. Just as bad, all but a handful of the old, prestigious military academies have closed their doors---most failing due to a declining interest in the martial lifestyle. Simply put, commissions are out, MBAs are in, and the American electorate is almost completely out of touch with the wisdom of George Washington who warned that “to obtain peace, prepare for war.”

This is not a healthy state of affairs for a nation that is the world’s sole remaining superpower. The projection of military force is, unfortunately, a very real and common aspect of United States foreign policy---especially in light of the War on Terror. But how can we expect the electorate to make informed decisions when so many of them are estranged from the realities of serving on the front lines? Also, how can we expect the populace to direct the actions of our government with wisdom and insight when the very people who inform our opinions---journalists, professors, and elected officials---are themselves completely ignorant of even the most basic understanding of military operations and the most mundane lessons of military history?

Don’t worry, I am not going to suggest that wargaming is the answer. However, I do believe that as these military simulators become ever more realistic, they cannot but help to have a positive impact on the body politic. I do believe that popular and realistic wargames may serve to replace the military acumen that was lost with the hallowed martial academies of yesteryear and engender a military understanding in our contemporary society. Nothing in the world can replace the actual experience of nabbing terrorists on the Iraqi-Syrian border, but a faithful simulation can impart the very same lessons of cross-border insurgencies to an individual sitting at home behind his desktop PC.

Of course, software programmers are going to have to step up to the plate and deliver something more than the abundant action-oriented but empty minded eye-candy that lines the shelves of most game stores. As wargames and realistic simulators are still something of a niche market (due to their steep learning curves and, as demonstrated above, hefty time commitments), the major publishers will be hesitant to meet this challenge. Fortunately, laissez-faire capitalism and the Internet have served to generate a number of small, independent publishers that are willing to create these complex programs for like-minded enthusiasts. So far, their record has been exemplary, and, as we all know, success creates more success. I am confident that the sparse library of informative wargames will increase with time.

As the library grows, so will those who become acquainted with this more serious form of recreational gaming, especially the gaming industry's prime demographic: teens through twenty-somethings---the same age group that military recruiters like to target. Clearly, there could be some real symbiosis between the private and public sector. The United States Army has been quick to act upon this belief with its development of a popular first person shooter (FPS) by the name of America’s Army. Mixing action with real-world military operations, this free, downloadable FPS has the Army hoping to reap the rewards of the Martial Matrix. Needless to say, this is only the beginning of what could be a most interesting development in the mixed-history of the military-industrial complex. Even more interesting, this could be the first wargame with measurable impact on the general population---whatever that impact may prove to be.

We all are familiar with the famous poster of Uncle Sam declaring that “I Want You!” for the United States Army. Well, in the not too distant future, it may well read “I Want You to Wargame!” Don’t laugh, vicarious experiences have real power. Remember, it was the popular fiction of Uncle Tom's Cabin that was credited with helping to ignite the Civil War. Wargames can be just as emotionally and intellectually informative as any work of fiction. And who’s to say that the tomorrow’s wargame fiction might not have the power to also start a war…or stop one?

The legacy of two wars now dominates the future of the War on Terror. One of the two should be manifestly clear: the Vietnam War. That war, the sin quo non of military history for the Left, has been thoroughly explained, analyzed, and interpreted by this pundit as well as many others. However, another war, one whose influence is just as palpable as that of the Vietnam ghost, has, thus far, gone without comment. The war of which I speak is the first war against Iraq---Gulf War One (a.k.a. Desert Storm).

Why do I consider this smashing victory of 1991 as so influential? Because it set America’s expectation of what a modern, high-tech warfare can deliver way too high.

Desert Storm was a remarkably clean war after our nation’s gritty experience in South East Asia. To start, it was every United Nations aficionado’s dream come true: 34 separate nations, united under U.N. auspices, cooperating to expel the Butcher of Baghdad from Kuwait. It was seen as a ray of hope, after a long, divisive Cold War, that a turbulent globe could join hands and work for the greater good of mankind---in this case, undoing a manifest wrong against the Kuwaiti people. Furthermore, this international cooperation also helped bolster America’s resolve. We were not ‘going it alone’, but could count on the support of a vast community of nations, even Middle Eastern states that, heretofore, were less than eager to assist any Western military operation.

Better, the actual military operations were just as encouraging. After hearing dire predictions from the experts, vis-a-vis the robust size and capabilities of the Iraqi military, the actual armed confrontation was almost anti-climatic. America began the war with a four week air assault, the size and complexity of which had not been seen since World War Two. Glitzy Cold War-era technology served to guide smart munitions to their targets with pinpoint accuracy. American’s could watch, with rapt attention, missiles and bombs attacking targets through windows and air shafts---from the weapon’s point of view, no less! The Iraqi military forces and command centers were quickly shattered with few loses to air personnel.

After the drubbing from the air, America sent in our vaunted armor and infantry forces. This was when everyone really held their breath---after all, America had not had to face a large ground war for over two decades. And not since World War Two had we faced an enemy so well endowed with tanks and armored vehicles of their own. Would the unproven M1 Abrams tank hold its own against the Iraqi owned and operated Soviet equipment? The answer was a resounding “yes!” After only 100 hours of direct combat, America’s “boots on the ground” had decisively bested their Iraqi foe, smashing even the vaunted Republican Guard formations that held much of Saddam’s neighbors in a state of perpetual fear.

America had won a victory of epic proportions, and all in less than two months worth of combat time. Even better, U.S. casualties were miraculous: 148 killed, with a sizeable percentage of that due to “friendly fire” incidents. It would seem America had rewritten the rule book on warfare.

And therein lays the problem.

Because of Desert Storm, the average American has come to demand that every war achieve the lofty heights of perfection set by Gulf War One. If victory is not achieved in 100 hours or less, if American ground casualties mount beyond 148, if a huge body of the world politic does not cheer us on, well, then, clearly defeat must be just around the corner, no?

This attitude is proving poisonous to our efforts in Iraq and must be overcome.

Americans must be given a crash-course in military history. They must be made aware that every war is different, each with its own peculiar set of conditions, its own standards of victory. The glorious radiance of Desert Storm must not be allowed to blind us to the fact that that war was the exception, not the rule. Wars, even American wars, have been bloody, tiring affairs. Consider the following:

During the Revolutionary War, total American deaths are estimated to be in the range of 6,824 over a period of eight years. America suffered over 400 killed in action at the Battle of Bunker Hill alone, a fight lasting a few hours.

During the War of 1812, this nation’s original ‘forgotten war’, we suffered 2,260 deaths and an additional 4,505 injured from 1812 to 1815.

Our brief, two year war with Mexico (1846-1848) generated 1,733 dead and another 4,152 wounded.

With the American Civil War, the victims really start piling up. From 1861 to 1865, America sustained a staggering 610,000 (360,000 Union, 250,000 Confederate) dead, with total casualties at 1.1 million! During the Battle of Antietam, the bloodiest single day in U.S. history, both sides suffered a combined 23,000 casualties. At the later Battle of Gettysburg, both sides endured 53,000 dead and wounded during the course of a three day battle!

The single-year Spanish American War (1898) resulted in 2,446 deaths, and 5,500 wounded soldiers. All that for one year….

The 20th Century would set new records for costly martial contests:

World War One (U.S. involvement: 1917-1918): 126,000 killed in action, 234,300 wounded.

World War Two (U.S. involvement: 1941-1945): 405,500 dead, 671,750 wounded. One D-Day alone (June 6, 1944), we lost 1,465 dead and 3,184 wounded. With the surprise attack now known as the Battle of the Bulge (December 16, 1944 to January 25, 1945), America suffered another 19,000 dead, and 38,446 wounded.

Korea (1950-1953): 36,934 dead and 103,284 wounded.

Vietnam (U.S. involvement: 1965-1975): 47, 378 killed in action, 10,799 wounded.

This is surely a grim list. It is interesting to note that as the technology of war became more sophisticated, the death toll increased accordingly. This fact teaches a lesson that stands against our experiences with Desert Storm: high technology is not a cure-all for the carnage of the battlefield.

In light of these figures, how does the fight in Iraq compare?

Operation: Iraqi Freedom (as of August 2005): American deaths number 1,830 since March of 2003. Total wounded is a higher figure at 13,769.

In comparison to our historic experiences for other major wars, our losses have been exceptionally light---that’s right, I’ll repeat it again: exceptionally light. Considering that America is fighting a war for over two years, one involving at least two fronts (i.e., against terrorists trained and equipped by both Syria and Iran), we have managed to deal far more death than we have received (thank God!). Even better, despite our enemy’s ruthless efforts, we have succeeded in creating the first freely elected, soon-to-be constitutional government in that region!

Of course, if you listen to the popular pundits, many of whom only can view our successes through a Vietnam-Desert Storm prism, we are failing miserably. They daily count off the American dead with the precision of an atomic clock (of course, never bothering to mention enemy casualties and setbacks), and demand to know why our troops have not squelched all armed opposition. What a sorry, pessimistic sham.

This is a real war, people!

We are facing an enemy just as determined to win as we are. Worse, we are fighting a foe that is desperate, with his back against the wall, for if the United States succeeds in creating a liberal democracy in Iraq, the very real end of Islamo-fascism will soon be seen on the horizon. Just as the mere existence of a free West Germany served to undermine the East German totalitarian rulers, an Iraq conceived in liberty will also serve to pull the rug out from under the mad mullahs of the Middle East.

Another thing: don’t let the words “terrorist” and “insurgent” confuse you. We are not fighting the orient’s equivalent of minutemen--- farmers armed with muskets. The people we are fighting are some of the best equipped and trained soldiers that the despotic regimes of Syria and Iran can muster (in addition to renegade Ba’athists). These are the shock troops of such bloody organizations as Hizballah and Ansar al-Islam---paramilitary organizations with extensive experience in maiming and killing. These guys might not wear a uniform, but they are as capable as any army that has ever marched under a national flag.

America must reacquaint itself with real war. This struggle has far less similarity to the quick and painless Desert Storm than it does with the titanic and bloody American Civil War and World War Two. There is no magic bullet, no amount of troops, no single weapon, which will prove a cure-all for enemy resistance. Just as the massive, armed might of General Eisenhower’s forces could not stop a determined Hitler from launching the Ardennes Offensive, there is nothing Iraq’s commanding general, George Casey, can do to win this struggle overnight. We must learn from the past. Abraham Lincoln, along with the soldier-hero of the Union, General Ulysses S. Grant, understood that the sole path to victory against the Confederacy was unceasing offensive operations until the rebels cracked. This strategy is appropriate for the War on Terror as well. President Bush and Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld understand that the enemy will never cease until they are smashed in detail. Battles will be fought, casualties will mount on both sides, but if we hold firm to our just cause, we will prevail. It will take time, it will not be easy, but, with God on our side, and the unceasing support of the American people for their fighting men and women at the front, we will succeed. And that is the sole formula for victory.

Fascist Lizards and Republican Presidents

You can always tell when a conservative-Republican president is in the White House. Suddenly, Hollywood studios and television production companies begin to take a keen interest in the political ideology of fascism. Driven by left-wing paranoia, directors and producers start releasing a flood of films and television shows that have us all looking under our beds for Hitler and in our closets for Francisco Franco. One such notable show during the so-called Reagan Years was a remarkable bit of science fiction known as “V”.

“V” first aired in 1983 with a well-received plot of invading fascist alien lizards. These lizards, cunningly disguised as humans with a vocal disorder, openly played to our hopes and desires, offering mankind a smorgasbord of new technology to solve our societal ills in exchange for an Earth-manufactured chemical needed to save their home world. Of course, all of this was just a cover story. In secret, the invaders were plotting to drain the Earth’s water supply and harvest its human population for food. To help achieve their nefarious plans, the aliens, who came to be known as “Visitors”, engineered a state of martial law by uncovering “criminal conspiracies” against the “peaceful” Visitors. The scapegoats for many of these conspiracies were the human scientists who threatened to unravel all of their scheming.

Is any of this starting to sound familiar? Obviously, “V” is an allegorical retelling of the rise of the Nazi party in Germany. From the alien’s swastika-like emblem, to their efforts to round-up and eliminate scientist troublemakers (Jews in the 1930s), everything about the aliens was an open allusion to the Nazi party. And let me assure you that through such clever history-inspired plot elements, the series created an alien race that contained far more motivational depth and fear-inducing realism than your typical green-man-from-outer-space baddie. As a result, “V” quickly became a science fiction landmark, and rightly so, with a huge fan base still active today. Its success ultimately led to “V: The Final Battle”, a three part miniseries released in 1984 that also received a lot of praise, albeit this component of the story focused more upon the action-packed heroics of the human “resistance movement” than plumbing the depths of historic allegory.

Now, any person who follows American politics knows that liberals habitually believe that every conservative has a pair of SS storm trooper boots hidden in his closet. It is for this reason that fascist conspiracies become such a popular plot element when the conservative star rises on the horizon. Anyone who has even the slightest political inclination will be able to watch the original “V” series and see the concealed swipes at the political environment which had ushered Ronald Reagan, the popular conservative Republican, into the White House. One of the most telling scenes involves an argument which erupts between Mike Donovan (played by Mark Singer), a TV news cameraman and member of the resistance, and his wealthy, power hungry, and Visitor-sympathetic, mother. During the argument, Donovan strongly warns his mother that one day you can wake up and discover that you are living in a fascist nation and realize it is too late to do anything about it. With lines like that, it would seem that the Visitors are not the only masters of propaganda.

Of course, Ronald Reagan served his two terms without instituting any fascist conspiracies. During the next decades, we would see one moderate Republican, George H. W. Bush, serving a single term, and one scandal-ridden liberal president, William J. Clinton, serving two terms with a noticeable lack of fascist warnings from Hollywood or television. The entertainment industry went dormant…at least temporarily.

With a sea change in national politics, the gurus of mass entertainment have reawakened with a strong sense of d?j? vu. Most interesting, NBC has deemed it to be the proper time to announce a remake of the original “V” miniseries, with a sequel possibly following soon after. One must wonder “why now?” Of course, the answer is rhetorical as the motivation is clear. With another conservative Republican serving as president, for his second term, no less, the fascist fetish is once again en vogue. History often repeats---just like a television series. And in this case, we have a repeat of both!

As a fan of the original series, I detest the idea of remaking the original miniseries. Sure, with today’s CGI technology, a new “V” could look great, but why tamper with a classic? Haven’t we had enough remakes? Hasn’t Hollywood suffered enough at the box office to get the hint? Where is the originality in the entertainment world? With fresh, new science fiction ideas lining the shelves of countless bookstores around the country, including a sizeable number of “V” spin-off books as well, why is NBC wasting money with a retread?

Worse, I know that the remake is going to be even more politically charged than the original. Don’t take my word for it, read the words of the series creator himself, Kenny Johnson:

“I've fashioned a remake story which maintains the integrity and thematic essence of my original themes and characters while updating it to address current lifestyles and issues facing society today.
The World War Two references have been replaced by much more recent incidents from the dark side of humanity. This has allowed me to sustain the underlying power of historic resonance that made the original so compelling and so well-received by critics and audiences alike.”

Those are some pretty scary words. Why jettison the titanic ordeal of World War Two? As the largest conflict in human history, a war the literally spanned the entire globe, anyone with even a minimal grasp of history can relate to the ordeal of opposing a technically-advanced menace such as the Nazis. Why jettison the very aspect of the story that made it so clever and smart?

Exactly what enemy does Mr. Johnson have in mind to replace the truly evil acts of the Nazis? Of course, the scourge of terrorism seems obvious. But let’s be honest---does anyone really expect Mr. Johnson to use an NBC production to portray Islamic terrorism as the honest to goodness threat that it is? Or perhaps Mr. Johnson has the threat of rogue nuclear nations, such as Iran or North Korea, in mind? Yeah, right! No, we all know how this remake is going to play out. Much like David Koepp, the script writer for Spielberg’s War of the Worlds, who said that “the Martians in our movie represent American military forces invading the Iraqis, and the futility of the occupation of a faraway land…”, I suspect we shall get similar left-wing rant of the evils of a conservative administration and the evils of the American military. No doubt there will be long lectures on the ease of duping people with promises of security against an imaginary foe, sermons detailing how easily liberty is squelched by strong and popular leaders, and how one man’s concept of liberty is another’s tyranny. Sigh, I can see it all now…..

Of course, I could be wrong. Mr. Johnson seems to be an individual with a firm grasp on world history (did you know “V” was originally a script about the French Resistance during World War Two?). Perhaps he will not follow the lemming-mentality of his liberal associates and will work his magic once again to deliver a fresh interpretation of a classic science fiction story. We can all hope. But given the record of contemporary television and movies, I am not optimistic.

With the surprise announcement that Justice Sandra Day O’Connor will be retiring from the Supreme Court, the nation suddenly finds itself preparing for a political civil war. Needless to say, this is going to be a nasty, polarizing fight of Lord of the Rings proportions! Within minutes of the official announcement, a number of Democrats (the Orks!), most notably Ted Kennedy amongst them, had rushed to the nearest microphone to issue an ultimatum to the president: either appoint a replacement justice that meets the loony-Left’s standard of quality (i.e., a justice that values a bloated and powerful central government more than the time-tested wisdom of the Constitution) or prepare for political obstructionism of immense magnitude.

For President Bush and the Grand Old Party (the Free Folk!), it is put-up or shut-up time.

As the recent, nasty confirmation battles over a few conservative appellate court nominees indicate, the Democrats are not going to go quietly into “that good night.” With every election relegating their party to the fringes of political authority, they fully understand that the court system is their last hold on real political power. Without the courts, especially the Supreme Court, their ability to continue to remake America in their twisted image will all but vanish. That is something they cannot allow…ever, no matter what the cost.

Conservatives, likewise, are determined to bring sanity to America’s legal system as they know that it has done real harm to the very fabric of this nation. From the legalized infanticide of Roe v. Wade, to the Darth Vader-like expansion of eminent domain powers in Kelo et al. v. City of New London, conservatives are prepared to set things right. “Enough!” they declare, of judges who seem to often base their decisions upon everything but the U.S. Constitution. The recent sorry history of the Court has it basing its decisions on everything from “constitutional penumbras” (that are really nothing more than black-robed chimeras) to international law! Heck, in McCreary County, Kentucky v. American Civil Liberties Union and Van Orden v. Perry, the highest court in the land even used the convoluted logic of geographic location to determine whether or not the Ten Commandments could be displayed on public land! Silly me, I thought the First Amendment would be a better yardstick….

The whole issue revolves around the concept of judges being “strict constructionists” or not. You see, the Left of this great nation believes that the U.S. Constitution is a “living document,” that is, that the meaning of the Constitution changes from time to time; it is subject to reinterpretation whenever a judge feels the need. As anyone with even a modicum of intellect can realize, such an idea will (and has) led to legal anarchy. Once justices are no longer bound to the black-and-white, written word of the Constitution, they are free to make up the law as they go along. Conservatives, on the other hand, believe that what you see is what you get; that there is nothing hidden between the lines of that hallowed document. It is as the Founding Fathers, in their infinite wisdom, deemed to be “necessary and proper” to the functioning of a limited government---no constitutional shadows are found, no surveys of European legal thought are necessary. This is the most sensible legal outlook. Think of it this way: would you want to play a game of chess with me using a set of “living rules?” If you did, you might discover, to your detriment, that all my pawns have the power of queens---just because, at the moment, I say they do ….

Now the Democrats are going to filibuster anyone President Bush nominates unless he is a card-carrying member of the ACLU. Republicans must be prepared for this. Even Senator McCain and his fellow apostate Republicans cannot prevent this (ironically, his “deal” lasted a mere few weeks). The so-called “nuclear” or “constitutional” option is going to be put back on the table. It has to be as a filibuster cannot be tolerated with such an important position needing to be filled. Compromise is not an option! The nation needs a hardcore, strict constructionist in that High Court chair. A lesser, not as well vetted candidate cannot be allowed; no more Warrens, please! We had enough of stealth-libs, thank you very much.

Democrats are going to try and argue that since Sandra Day O’Connor was a “moderate” or “swing-voter”, that a similar person should be appointed. Nonsense. Just because Justice O’Connor preferred inconsistent legal reasoning does not mean a similar candidate must be appointed. We seek constitutional clarity first and foremost, not switch hitters.

So it comes down to this: neither side can afford to back down---the stakes are just too high. One thing is for sure: the American people twice elected President Bush, and twice increased the number of Republicans in Congress. They are expecting noticeable results. They are watching. The G.O.P. cannot back down. This is the moment when they must decide if they prepared to fight for what they ostensibly believe in. The side that flinches loses---perhaps for years to come.

Hit ‘em Again!

As a student of American history and politics, I am loathe to ever label a particular American institution as something less than worthy of praise, but in the case of the modern Democrat party, I will make an exception. The truth of the matter is that modern Democrats, and their parent organization, the D.N.C., is as anti-American as you can get. They are no longer just a party with differing opinions as to the best solutions to the problems that face this great nation, they are now a party that a) refuses to acknowledge the greatness of this nation whatsoever, and b) actively seek to undermine the principles and beliefs that have proven essential to our national well-being. This is not the work of patriots, this is the work of traitors.

Now, before I continue, I guess I need to offer the requisite disclaimer so that the nitwitted Left does not feel compelled to object with their standard “no stereotyping!” tactic. So, this is for them: not ALL Democrats are traitors! But, having said that, the Democrat Party is clearly dominated by extreme Leftists that hate all things American. How else could one explain the election of Howard Dean, a hateful, irrational man of Michael Moore proportions, as the head of the Democrat National Committee, and thereby, the boss of all Democrats? If there are so-called “moderates” in the party anymore, clearly they have been neutered by their “liberal” friends who installed one of their own into the top-spot.

By the way: don’t let words fool you. Left-wingers love to describe themselves as “liberals” or members of the “Democratic (sic)” party. They are neither champions of liberty nor defenders of democracy. They are just the opposite. This is an old trick first used by Lenin when he decided to name his new political party the Bolsheviks. “Bolshevik” can be roughly translated as “majority”, with the implication that his party was preponderantly popular with the Russian people---something decidedly not true. But Lenin understood the value of propaganda, as the modern Democrat party does as well. So when it comes to the chosen names of various liberal organizations, just assume they champion the values opposite of those proffered by a particular appellation.

Back to the argument at hand.

I think the clearest indication of the patriotism of the Left can be found by examining the words of top Democrats regarding our valiant war in Iraq and Afghanistan. While Republicans, and sane Americans of all political stripes, see the manifest value of winning this fight, Democrats have done nothing but seek to actively undermine the war effort and all those associated with it---including the troops. How else to explain House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi publicly calling the Iraq war "a grotesque mistake"? Or Democrat John Conyers crafting a petition, now hosted by Moveon.org, asking the president to explain if there was “a coordinated effort with the U.S. intelligence community…to ‘fix’ the intelligence and facts” concerning the justification for going to war in Iraq? Or Senator Ted Kennedy proclaiming that President Bush “concocted a war for political gain.” Or Richard Durbin, the Democrat’s number two man in the Senate, equating the behavior of U.S. troop at Gitmo with Nazis concentration camps, Soviet gulags, or Pol Pot’s killing fields? I could go on, and on, and on. The point is that these are not the words of patriots who claim to support the troops. These are the words of individuals who seek to pull the rug out from under the very troops that have liberated millions from despotic regimes in Iraq and Afghanistan. And that is treason in my book.

No one should be surprised by this type of behavior. After all, this is the Democrat Party that willingly lost the Vietnam War via the same tactics. First they innocently questioned the war’s legitimacy. Then they proceeded to emphasize all the innocent civilians being harmed by U.S. military operations. Next, using their colleagues in the media and pop culture, mass protests of the war were organized with assured network coverage. Before long, demands for a timetable for troop withdrawal were heard from the left side of the aisle, no matter what the harmful implications it would have for the people of South Vietnam. Finally, once their goal was within sight, all pretense of supporting the troops were cast aside, and the U.S. military was made focus of all evil in the world.

When it was all said and done, millions of Vietnamese and Cambodians were sentenced to death by the communist regimes that moved into the vacuum left by our troops. Worse, the American military was a shattered wreck, and U.S. prestige around the world was at brought to an all-time low. Of course, for liberals, this was a victory for their global, anti-American, Marxist cause---a victory still cherished to this very day (alongside the ousting of Nixon, of course).

And this is exactly what the modern Left, as represented by the D.N.C., seeks to achieve yet again. You see, to your mainstream liberal, America is the worst nation on the face of the planet. Even when we do undisputed good, such as deposing a thug like Saddam Hussein, libs just assume it is all part of a nefarious plan to further enslave humanity with the American yoke.

This is why I found it so encouraging to hear the word’s of Karl Rove this past week. He had hit the nail on the head when he said that liberals, who had witnessed 9-11, wanted to prepare indictments and offer therapy to the terrorists. This, of course, is quite true (as evidenced by the MoveOn.org memo telling the president to use “restraint” when responding to the attacks), and is why the Left is going absolutely nuts over this candid accusation! The truth is not the friend of the modern leftist because they know that if they were made to come clean concerning their beliefs and goals, the average American would run screaming in the opposite direction. So for Rove to make this statement was to come dangerously close to “outing” the average liberal Democrat.

I found it particularly amusing how New York Senators Charles Schumer and Hillary Clinton felt obliged to have a press conference demanding an apology from Rove. While Dick Durbin was comparing American troops to Nazis, Charles Schumer and Hillary Clinton managed to be blissfully unaware of that national controversy. Hillary was too busy pushing another form of her socialized medicine (during a radio interview, she was asked about Durbin’s remarks, but refused to offer any comment on the issue), and Schumer was too busy demanding the resignation of Ken Tomlinson, the chairman of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (clearly, Tomlinson’s crime was to have the audacity to utter his belief that PBS had become too liberal and needed more political balance without first checking with the D.N.C.). However, when Mr. Rove made his truthful observation, the Dynamic Duo sprung into action almost instantly! How dare Rove speak that truth without their permission!

The hypocrisy is simply staggering.

Now, some Republicans have been off the mark in responding to the words of Mr. Rove as well. Bill Kristol said that the comments went too far. Brit Hume disagreed, but was quick to point out that Rove was not criticizing all liberals, just those of MoveOn.org. The truth of the matter is that Karl Rove was criticizing all liberals, and rightly so! We must not shrink from the truth! Liberals are not the friends of America and deserve no polite consideration or courtesy when discussing their motives and methodologies. The sooner they are exposed as what they are, traitors to the American way of life, the better we will all be.

This whole incident reminds me of the Charles Sumner affair. On May 19, 1856, Whig Senator Charles Sumner, an ardent abolitionist, made an impassioned speech in which he denounced the pro-slavery "Border Ruffians" in Kansas Territory. Three days later, an enraged Southern Democrat, by the name of Preston Brooks, entered the Senate chamber and bludgeoned Sumner with a light cane! When word of the attack spread across the nation, Brooks received new canes from supporters and well-wishers, many inscribed with the motto “Hit him again!” Brooks ultimately resigned his office, but was overwhelmingly re-elected to his former position as South Carolinian congressman once again.


In my opinion, Democrats have continued to beat their opponents around the head ever since. Strapped for good ideas, they have had little else to offer than ad homonym attacks to counter G.O.P. ideas. But, for a few moments last week, a senior Republican had the courage and audacity to snatch the cane from their hands and issue a beating of his own. So, to the brave Karl Rove, I offer this: Hit ‘em again!

Back in 1997, Garry Kasparov, perhaps the world’s finest chess player ever, matched wits with a metal monstrosity by the name of Deep Blue. In a previous 1996 match, Kasparov had handily defeated the chess-playing machine. But in the 1997 New York rematch, Deep Blue, now supercharged with the latest technology and new chess programming, defeated humanity’s reigning chess champion. It was a stunning blow. But man was not crestfallen; a glimmer of hope could be seen. After all, Deep Blue could only obtain victory after playing six games against Garry, winning by a mere point! All in all, not a bad showing for a man who was mentally-dueling a machine that could “see” 200 million chess positions per second!

Now, in 2005, a similar contest has taken place in London. The contestants were a grandmaster by the name of Michael Adams, ranked seventh strongest player in the world (with a rating of 2737), and Hydra Scylla, a chess playing 64-way cluster computer that never suffered a defeat at the hands of a human being! There were high hopes that Adams, fully aware of the awesome capabilities of these contemporary HAL 9000s, would prepare carefully, fight hard, and ultimately dispatch the checkmating Terminator to the computer trash bin.

Alas, no such good news can be reported.

Not only did Hydra defeat Adams, he defeated him with maximum cruelty by only allowing the human grandmaster a single draw over the course of six games! It was a crushing defeat that has all but extinguished the flickering flame of hope for the eventual triumph of man’s rational supremacy.

The long wait is over and now we know. Michael Jackson has been ruled “not guilty” on ten separate criminal charges. The magnitude of error this blanket acquittal represents is staggering. How twelve adults could reasonably conclude that the mountain of evidence presented against Jackson was of no account what-so-ever is simply beyond understanding. Like O.J. Simpson and Robert Blake, a celebrity criminal has been set free to haunt the Golden State once again. Regrettably, America will be forced to accept this judgment as yet another example of California justice.

Let’s get one thing straight: Michael Jackson is not innocent, just “not guilty”. He is still clearly a man in the grip of evil, a slave, unwillingly or not, of Satan. Some of you might conclude that this statement is nothing more than hyperbole. It is not. I truly believe this to be the case. Why? Consider the following.

It is well know that Satan, the father of all evil, delights in mocking and perverting the goodness of God. From tempting Adam and Eve, God’s special and beloved creation, into Original Sin, to his foiled attempts to do the same with Christ, he exists only to ruin all that God does for the benefit of mankind. It is his jealousy and self-idolization that motivates him; his desire to be God rather than to serve Him.

Michael Jackson is no different. He, too, mocks God. I find it quite interesting that Jackson chose to use the terms “Jesus juice” for white wine and “Jesus blood” for red wine. Of all the possible code-names that one could create to disguise the proffering of alcohol to a child, it is curious that he would deliberately tie the name of Jesus to his crime and sin against the innocence of childhood. What could be more deliberately insulting to the sacrifice offered by Christ?

Likewise, one must consider Jackson’s appearance. Some call it “weird.” I call it a deliberate affront to God. To paraphrase Shakespeare, God gave him one face, and he made himself another. His very image is a rebellion against the wisdom of God in his creation. Satan cannot create life, he can only pervert it. Michael Jackson’s image is testimony to that fact.

Likewise, the nature of his alleged crimes is more testimony to the evil that might grip Jackson. Child predation is one of the worst of all possible human offenses. Christ himself spoke to the special place children occupied in his Sacred Heart:

“Whosoever shall receive one such child as this in my name, receiveth me. And whosoever shall receive me, receiveth not me, but him that sent me…. And whosoever shall scandalize one of these little ones that believe in me; it were better for him that a millstone were hanged around his neck, and he were cast into the sea.” ---Mark 9: 36, 41

If the allegations against Jackson are true in fact, if not in law, and I still believe they are, he is guilty of doing far worse than just scandalizing children---he robs them of their innocence through alcohol, homosexual pornography, and worse. He is preying upon the beloved of Christ. He is elevating his own perverted pleasure above the well-being of others, in effect, elevating himself above the law of God as expressed by the Ninth Commandment.

It is for these reasons that I believe Michael Jackson to be guilty of the charges that were formerly levied against him. Of course, I fully recognize that I may be wrong, that the charges were in error and he was justly acquitted. Only God knows for sure and he will judge accordingly when the time comes. As an old-fashioned Roman Catholic, I believe in the ancient tradition of the Church Militant. This idea expresses the fundamental truth that this world is the chessboard upon which a war of good versus evil is continually waged. I believe evil has won this battle and has protected a tool of world-wide perversion. But it has not won the war. Christ will ultimately prevail. Perhaps this traumatic experience will compel Jackson to change his ways, confess his sins, and return to the Lord. Remember, even when it appeared that evil had triumphed at Calvary, with the crucifixion of Christ, it had actually lost for all time. Satan had won the battle, but lost the war by the saving sacrifice of Jesus. Let us pray that this spectacle of the Jackson trial proves the same. It’s in God’s hands now---and always was.

The Anti-Americans Are At It Again


9-11 was the Pearl Harbor of the 21st Century. Approximately 3000 innocent men, women, and children were murdered by a pack of Islama-fascists who had been fueled by a lifetime of heresy-inspired hatred for the United States of America. But instead of achieving success, these terrorists ultimately failed. Similar to December 7th, 1941, the attacks on September 11th signaled not the doom of a strong America, but the waking of a sleeping giant whose beneficent leadership had been missing from the world stage for far too long. Because of the subsequent determined leadership of President George W. Bush and Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, terrorist thugs, and the regimes that provide support to them, have been captured, killed, or toppled around the globe. The results have been immediate and impressive. The Middle East, now liberated from tyrannical regimes like the Taliban in Afghanistan, and Saddam Hussein in Iraq, is changing for the better. True democratic reforms are taking place, as in Iraq, weapons are being laid down, as in Libya, and even the ever turbulent relationship between Israel and the PLO has calmed greatly as regional terrorist networks are disrupted by our efforts.

This is the true legacy of 9-11. Not one of Islamic tyranny, but American liberty.

But will you hear about any of this at the proposed World Trade Center Memorial Cultural Complex, as designed by the International Freedom Center (IFC), that is to be built upon Ground Zero?

I am afraid not.

You see, a handful of America-hating Leftists have seized ideological control of IFC planning, and is proposing to build a 300,000 square foot center that does not honor the heroes and victims of 9-11, but rather seeks to ?blame America first?. As detailed in an excellent Wall Street Journal Op-Ed piece by Debra Burlingame (http://takebackthememorial.org/?p=6), the likes of prominent America-haters, such as George Soros and Eric Foner, are planning on constructing a monument that will focus upon ?man?s inhumanity to man, from Native American genocide to the lynchings and cross-burnings of the Jim Crow South, from the Third Reich?s Final Solution to the Soviet gulags and beyond.? What, exactly, does any of this have to do with 9-11? The answer, of course, is nothing. The radical anti-patriots are clearly using their favorite rhetorical tactic of ?bait and switch?, a ploy that is all too necessary for the Left when the majority of Americans don?t want to buy what they are selling. In this case, they pretend to honor the American victims of 9-11, but instead switch the discussion to their favorite hobbyhorses: alleged American failings and the trumpeting of globalism.

Needless to say, Ground Zero is not the place for such discussions. It has been consecrated by the blood of the heroes and victims of 9-11. As such, any memorial must be exclusively focused upon these patriots and the great, liberty-loving nation for which they died.
